The Year of No Resolutions

I love lists. Have I mentioned this before? And New Year’s seems like the perfect time to make lists and goals and resolutions. It’s a list-maker’s heaven, right?

But this year I’m not writing resolutions. Gasp!

To be honest, I only followed through with 2, maybe 3, of last year’s goals.

I do have a few big things coming up in 2018, don’t get me wrong. But actual resolutions? Well, not this year.

The only thing I want to do in 2018 is love Jesus more. And when I love Him more, everything else will fall into place. I will be a more patient mother. I will be a more loving wife. I will be a better co-worker. I will be a more faithful friend.

I want to follow Jesus wherever He leads me. But listen, this is scary for me because, hello? Have we met?

  • I am a planner. I want to know steps 7, 8, and 9 before I begin with step 1. And that’s just not how God works. He expects us to step out in faith, sometimes without even knowing step 2. Thankfully, Scripture reminds us in Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV) that:

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

  • Also, I’m an introvert. I like to stay in my own little bubble, my comfortable house, and only invite people into my life that I can handle for more than 5 minutes. But I need to trust Jesus to lead me where He wants me to go. According to Psalm 138:3 (NASB) all we need to do is ask for boldness and He will strengthen us.

“On the day I called, You answered me; You made me bold with strength in my soul.”

I’ve recently been reading a book called Walk It Out and I’ve been reminded over and over that the more we love Jesus, the more we will see opportunities around us to serve and love others.

So this year, I will:

  • connect with my community
  • invite people into our home and do life with them
  • talk to my children about Jesus as He teaches and leads

This year, I will love Jesus.

I want to rediscover Him in new ways and trust Him more deeply.

What about you? Do you make resolutions each year? If so, what are some of yours for 2018?

  1. Oh, so very good! May I, too, learn to love Jesus more and may that love SHINE through me! Blessings on your 2018!

  2. I love this! Last year my word was “Jesus!” And this year it’s “Jesus” again, so I think I understand where you’re coming from. Thanks for the encouragement.
