Everyday Minutia

The beginning of the school year, or the beginning of anything really, can be hectic. Learning new routines and expectations, the busyness of being the Uber driver of the family for all the kids’ activities, it can be a lot.

Just this week, I was shuttling Brienne to swim team practice and the little kids were in the backseat of the van. I was thinking of all the things I needed to do: write some IEPs for work, finish my lesson plans for the upcoming week, grocery shop, meal plan, laundry. You know – the daily activities of life. I found myself getting a little stressed as I whispered under my breath:

“I cannot keep up with my life.”

And just as those words left my lips, I heard a little voice peep from the backseat:

“Yes you can! God can take care of it. You just need to pray!”

Oh sweet little one. You are so right. I just need to pray.

Why do we always feel as if we can’t go to God with the little things, the everyday things, the mundane things. Or is that just me? So often, I know that He has given me all these blessings – a good husband, three wonderful (and trying) children, a nice house, a good job – and I feel as if I should just be thankful and happy and everything will work out and I should never be stressed because then it feels like I’m ungrateful. But in reality, the everyday minutia of life CAN be stressful.

I have recently been reading through Psalms and came across chapter 37. Y’all, there is so much truth and goodness in that chapter. God starts off by telling us to dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Sometimes we just have to put our head down and be faithful in our everyday lives even when it’s hard or monotonous.

Verse 5 tells us to commit everything we do to the Lord. Why is is so hard to come before Him with the little things? The things we don’t think actually matter? Because it all actually matters.

Verse 7 says this: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him…” Patience is not really a strength of mine. When I’m waiting on something that I really want to happen, I tend to get irritable and frustrated, and I try to make it happen on my own. I’m learning, however, that the benefits always come in the waiting.

Verse 11 tells us we will inherit the land with prosperity when we are faithful to what we’ve been given. I don’t know about you but I want to “inherit the land with prosperity.”

And finally, verses 23-24 tells us He delights in us and He holds our hand. One of favorite verses is Zephaniah 3:17: “The Lord your God is with you, The Mighty Warrior who saves you. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

I love the thought of the God of the Universe holding my hand and rejoicing over me with singing. Isn’t that a beautiful picture?

So today, when your are shuffling through the mundane everyday tasks of life, remember the God is with you. He wants you to call to him in trouble, and trust him in difficult times.

He loves you, my friend.

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” -John 4:9-12
