My Word of the Year for 2023

I can’t believe it’s already 2023. I’m just now getting used to writing 2022 and now I have to learn a whole new set of numbers! What is wrong with me these days?

I’ve been thinking and praying about my word of the year for the past few weeks. I generally pick a word I feel God is talking to me about. Last year, my word was celebrate. I wanted to have more joy and celebration in my life. I’m not sure I was super successful with that concept – celebrations and creativity  just aren’t my jam – but I did try harder than I have in the past. So I guess we could call that success.

When I started thinking about my word for 2023, though, I kept looking backward, thinking about some of the books I read in 2022 and themes I’ve been hearing, most of which were along the lines of listening to Jesus. Walking with God. Being present.

So I decided to choose the word Presence for my 2023 Word of the Year.

The concept of presence is not unfamiliar to me. We talk about being in the presence of God all the time. But “presence” could be taken in many different ways.

Sitting in God’s presence.

Listening to Him and following after Him.

Being present with my family.

Being present with whoever God puts in front of me.

This year I also feel drawn back to scripture memory. I’m not sure what the future holds, but I get the feeling I’ll need to have some scripture stored up in my heart for one purpose or another. And I’ve been drawn to a couple verses about presence:

“I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 16:8 NIV

“You make known to me the path of life; you fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Psalm 16:11 NIV

So I will meditate on His Presence this year. I will seek more of His Presence. I will seek to hear His voice.

I want to be in the presence of Jesus each and every day, listening to Him as He leads me.

Presence.

It seems like a good word for 2023.

Do you choose a word or verse of the year? I’d love to hear about it!
